Anakbayan to Aquino: Jail Gloria Arroyo, distribute Hacienda Luisita, address people’s issues now!

National youth group Anakbayan joined workers and other sectors in a protest held in Mendiola, Manila this morning, following yesterday’s conviction of the Supreme Court’s chief magistrate.

The youth group said that while they welcomed the impeachment court’s decision, the people should be warned that Corona’s conviction may give rise to an ‘Aquino court’. Thus, Aquino will be granted full control not only of the judiciary but all three branches of government.

“It did not come as a surprise seeing that the Aquino ruling clique and its legion, Akbayan Party, has stepped up tirades against the chief justice, used the congressional pork barrel as pressure point and the entire state machinery to secure conviction”, said Charisse Bañez, national secretary-general.

An ‘Aquino court’ would make the forcible shoving of policies and programs in favor of the elite few as easy as breeze.

The organization of young workers, peasants, out of school and urban poor youth and students expressed that “Corona’s conviction may not bring about significant change in the lives of the Filipino people suffering from extreme poverty and hunger”.

“We challenge the Aquino government to immediately distribute the Hacienda Luisita lands to its rightful owners. We fear that the CJ’s removal from the SC would enable the landlord president to avail of powers to overturn the high court’s decision”, Bañez said.

Ultimately, according to Anakbayan, Corona’s impeachment trial was a counterblow against a historical SC decision ordering the distribution of Hacienda Luisita and an outright maneuver to preserve the Cojuangco-Aquino family’s monopoly of the vast landholding.

Meanwhile, Anakbayan said that Aquino and his allies, who granted Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo political accommodations in exchange for a smooth transition of power in 2010, are no longer left with any ‘palusot’ for its failure to prosecute and jail Arroyo for her crimes against the people.

“Aquino can no longer stem the people’s growing clamor to prosecute and punish Arroyo for the biggest cases of corruption, war crimes and gross violations of human rights and wholesale election fraud. Aquino could’ve held Arroyo accountable sans the impeachment powwow”, they said.

If anything, toeing the line of his much-abused ‘daang matuwid’, Aquino and his ‘Kaklase, Kaibigan, Kamag-anak and Kabarilan’ (KKKK) should be held accountable for their corruption and abuse of public office for personal and partisan interests. The challenge for their disclosure of bank accounts and financial records stand.

“Large-scale corruption is rife in the implementation of Aquino’s key programs, the Conditional Cash Transfer and Public Private Partnerships where state contracts are negotiated to favor his KKKK, among other big foreign and local businessmen”, Bañez said.

But for the most part, Anakbayan presses on the people’s basic demands: job generation, decent wages and the reduction of oil price, appropriation of bigger budgets to education and other social services, genuine land reform and an end to urban poor demolitions.

“After the blitz and glitz of the spectacle that is the impeachment trial has died down, we think it’s time for the Aquino government to stop grandstanding and immediately address gut issues sidetracked in the process”. ###

Youth rally on Earth Day in SM Calamba faced violent dispersal; Protesters slam Henry Sy for ‘corporate greed’, Aquino for ‘noynoying’ on envi issues

Around 25 youth who staged lightning rally in front of SM Calamba on Earth Day against ‘corporate greed’ of Henry Sy were violently dispersed – women were beaten, a student was injured and equipment of the local press covering the event was also confiscated – by some 15 SM security forces and a couple of Calamba traffic officers.

“These security forces are so vicious,” Carla Bertulfo, member of Kabataan Partylist-Southern Tagalog said in teary eyes. “Sinikmuraan kami (hit on the torso), and they shouted on us ‘putang ina niyo!’” she continued.

At around 2 p.m. the youth groups Anakbayan-Southern Tagalog, League of Filipino Students-UPLB and Kabataan Partylist-Southern Tagalog assembled in front of SM Calamba. Meanwhile, combined elements of Calamba Public Ordinance and Safety Officers and SM security forces immediately encircled around the protesters, who are shouting “Dagdagan ang puno, huwag ang tubo!” and “SM at Henry Sy, salot!”

Another three men in civilian attire allegedly included among the SM security forces repeatedly grabbed the camera used by local media men covering the event.

Soon after the dispersal, the protesters held their program along the national road in front of SM Calamba. While Bertulfo delivers her speech, the same security forces and traffic officers pushed the protesters toward the other end of the road and confiscated their flags, streamers and placards. One flag bearer was hit on the toes by a security force causing the former light injuries.

“Earth Day is a day of protest for the youth. We cannot let the likes of Henry Sy who are driven with corporate greed destroy our rich natural resources,” Bertulfo said, emphasizing the recent tree balling that occurred in Baguio City and land-use conversion in Nasugbu, Batangas. Bertulfo, a BS Biology graduate in UP Los Banos revealed the conversion of about 8,000-hectare Hacienda Looc in Batangas into private resorts, club houses, sea ports and golf course.

Meanwhile, Bertulfo expressed her dissatisfaction towards the Aquino government’s “lack of appropriate action” on the glaring environmental destruction. “As usual, Mr. Aquino is ‘noynoying’ on this day. Instead of upholding national patrimony and environmental protection, he turned a blind eye on the potential coral reef destruction in Palawan due to Balikatan exercises’ plans to have live ammunitions underwater,” she said.

The group was able to retrieve their protest materials, including the local press camera. They transferred to the City Terminal where they hold another peaceful program.

“We are resolved to bring the issue of environmental destruction to a widespread protest. This is the beginning of our series of protest actions that will culminate on May 1, as we celebrate international Labor Day,” Bertulfo ended. ###

‘Dagdagan ang puno, hindi ang tubo!’ (A statement of Anakbayan-Southern Tagalog on Earth Day protest in SM Calamba)

 Puno ka ba?

Kasi gusto kitang i-earth ball, at sirain!

SAVE THE BAGUIO PINE TREES!”

MINING ACT 1995, IBASURA! PEOPLE’S MINING BILL, IPASA!

IPAGTANGGOL ANG PAMBANSANG PATRIMONYA!

TAYO ANG 99% LABAN SA 1% DAYUHAN, BURGESYA-KOMPRADOR AT ASENDERONG GAHAMAN!
