Day 1: Southern Tagalog Human Rights Week 2011 @ NInoy Aquino Monument, Quezon Ave.

People’s organizations headed by Karapatan-Southern Tagalog and the United Church of Christ of the Philippines launched today the kick-off of the Human Rights Week 2011 in commemoration of the 63rd Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations. The groups held a liturgy 8AM this morning at Ninoy Aquino Monument, Delta, Quezon Avenue together with relatives of political prisoners in Southern Tagalog.

Karapatan-ST denounced the continuing dismal condition of political prisoners in the country which includes Ka Nestor San Jose, a political prisoner who died due to an illness while detained at Quezon Provincial Jail last Nov. 9 due to lack of health assistance by the government.

“Political prisoners are persecuted for fighting for their rights while when you are corrupt and powerful like Gloria, you can avail hospital medications and special accomodations,” Glen Malabanan, deputy secretary general of Karapan-ST said.
The groups also unveiled a giant quilt which composed of 81 artworks from artists, students and other people of all walks of life depicting the human rights situation in the country. #
