Anakbayan congratulates Luisita farmers, urges free distribution of land, continued vigilance vs. Cojuangco-Aquino maneuverings

The 12,000-strong national youth group Anakbayan joins the entire Filipino people in celebrating the historic ruling of the Supreme Court regarding the Cojuangco-Aquino-owned Hacienda Luisita, We send our warmest congratulations to the farmers for remaining resolute and strong so that they could reach this monumental day. We salute all those who gave their lives in this struggle, including several members of the Anakbayan chapter in Luisita.

We thank the farmers for concretely teaching the Filipino youth and students that only through militant and collective action can our democratic rights be upheld. Throughout the years, thousands of youths and students have visited Luisita in solidarity trips. Many were enlightened regarding social realities, and many were inspired to become activists so that they could concretely contribute towards the realization of a new society in which there would be no Luisitas to oppress farmers.

We demand an immediate implementation of the Supreme Court ruling. To President Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III and the Department of Agrarian Reform: No more excuses! Whether you have divested yourself of your shares in Luisita is not an issue. We want you to implement the ruling, the law, and uphold the interests of the farmers. Distribute Luisita for free to all the farmers in the hacienda.

We urge all those who are celebrating and shedding tears of joy today to remain vigilant. As long as the SC ruling hasn’t been implemented, there is always the danger of maneuverings by the Cojuangco-Aquinos to hijack our victory, such as: subjecting Luisita to the sham CARPER, asking for ‘compensation’ or making the farmers pay for what they have paid for long ago, bogus land calculations, etc.

Ultimately, only through the continued militant efforts of the farmers and the people will ensure our victory. We urge the Filipino youth to support the Luisita farmers should they decide to occupy and takeover the Hacienda, and till the land so that they can concretely benefit from it.
